Will there be another season of On My Block?
Though Netflix has not renewed On My Block yet, the show in the past has been a big hit for the streamer, suggesting that unless there has been a big change in the viewing figures, the series is safe. In 2018, for example, the show was the most binge-watched of all of Netflix’s series. That same year, Google said On My Block was the 10th most-searched TV series of the year.
What is more, the show’s co-creator Lauren Iungerich signed up for a multi-year series deal with Netflix on March 5, which is a good sign that she will be producing more of On My Block, alongside a number of new projects for the streaming service.
In a statement announcing this deal, Netflix’s vice president of young adult and family series, Brian Wright, all but confirmed On My Block would be back for Season 4. He said: “Lauren’s talent and track record of success speak for themselves…Her unique voice and commitment to representation lend her projects an authenticity that has resonated with audiences worldwide. We’re thrilled to continue working with her on On My Block and look forward to other future projects.”
As all three seasons so far have aired in March, expect the release date of Season 4 to follow suit in 2021. Fans should also expect all four of the main cast members to return for more, though following the events of the end of Season 3, they may not be the tight group they used to be.
However, the cast has reassured fans that things will be alright at the end. Genao told Refinery29: “No crew is ever friends for life definitively. But the core four is the core four, you know…Season 3 does bring little riffs, but nothing that I would say definitely takes us away [from each other].”
Tinoco, meanwhile, told PopSugar: “The story’s not over…I was shocked by the ending of season three. I didn’t see it coming at all — not the slightest bit. I was surprised, and I honestly didn’t want to film it because it was so heartbreaking. But I trust the writers and whatever they have ready for Cesar and the whole gang.”
